Hi there! I’ll record how to use Library Override since I learned that today.
Have you ever used Append or Link systems? I usually use Append because I create my projects alone. If you join a big team, it will be helpful!
Let’s get start it!
1. What is Library Override?
First, Library Override is limited in what it can edit. It is a convenient function that refers to a Link Source, and if you edit an object in the Link Source, the edits will be applied when synchronized with other Blender Files. I recommend editing a source file when you use a linked object.
Here is an example. I changed his texture color. I also changed his pose. Check what changes or not. Don’t forget to save your data before reverting your data!
2. Library Override for rigs
It’s easy to explain Library Override of the rig.
First of all, link a collection that has a character rig. Then you can’t edit its pose.
Editing it, right-click on the collection in the outliner → Library Override → Make → Selected & Content.
After that, you can edit the pose in Pose mode. You can just create animation. It cannot be in Edit mode.
Did you notice the change that the Transform area’s colors were light blue? This means that the source data is overwritten.
Have you ever seen a check box, which is “Overridable”, in a custom property area? I had no idea what this meant, but I finally understood.
To be able to edit custom properties on a linked data, we have to turn it on. If you don’t, you cannot adjust the value of a custom property! Don’t forget to turn on the check box!
Here is an example.
3. Library Override for objects
Here is a basic way using link. Don’t forget to save your data before reverting your data.
With object data, the data of Library Override is locked in Blender 4.3.2 in the default, so you need to unlock what you want to change.
To move them, just press this icon, then the data will be a local data (not sync), or press one with the Shift button, then you can edit the data by override.
When an object data is in override, if you select the reset button, the override values will be reset. Local data isn’t reset.
